Veneers in Vietnam: Post-care instructions for dental tourists

In recent years, a lot of dental tourists from Australia, the US and New Zealand travel to Vietnam to get dental veneers (according to Saingoneer). Veneers are one of the most effective cosmetic dentistry treatments to perfect your smile. After getting dental veneers in Vietnam, it is crucial for dental tourists to follow home-care instructions to get the best treatment result. Follow this handy guide to take proper care of your dental veneers at home with only six simple steps.

1. Practice Good Oral Hygiene Daily

1.1. Brush

Use nonabrasive toothpaste and brush at least twice a day, ideally, you should brush after every meal.

1.2. Floss

Floss at least once a day to remove particles caught between teeth. It is highly recommended that you floss after every meal. When flossing, instead of lifting the floss back out, slide it from between the teeth to avoid loosening the temporary restoration.

1.3. Rinse

If rinsing is essential, please choose alcohol-free mouthwash. Excessive exposure to alcohol can soften the bonding composites that hold the veneers to your teeth. Even though the softening may not cause the veneers to pop off, it makes them more vulnerable to deterioration and staining.

2. Beware of stain

Like your natural teeth, veneers can slowly be degraded and stained so please try to avoid or keep to a minimum food causing discoloration: curry, colas, grape juice, blueberries, tobacco, coffee, tea, soy sauce or red wine. Smoking is also the main cause of drain. Therefore, if you want your veneers to be white and healthy, quit smoking as soon as possible. Do not use baking soda or any abrasive kinds of toothpaste. Regular “paste” toothpaste such as Oral B, Colgate, etc, is advised for veneers over the “gel” kind of toothpaste.

3. Protect your veneers

It’s high time you got rid of your old bad habits. Opening packages with your teeth, nail-biting, chewing ice, or pipe smoking should be avoided. Actions that put pressure on the veneers such as hard candy, nuts or hard bread and rolls are not recommended, because it will lead to a fracture. Generally, remember that veneers are susceptible to chipping on harder things that may also chip natural teeth.

If you have grinding or clenching habits, highly consider wearing a nightguard to protect your teeth while sleeping.

If a chip or fracture occurs, it may require only a simple renewal using a bonded composite. This would involve a short appointment and the fee is similar to that for restoration for a front tooth. The veneers are required to be replaced in case more significant fractures occur.

4. Prepare your medicines

Only use medical substances that your dentist recommends. Your dental professional will typically suggest using non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste. Meanwhile, stannous fluoride or acidulated phosphate fluoride should be avoided for porcelain as they may etch the surface after using a lot. If your prescription is not available in your country except for Vietnam, please ask your Vietnamese dentist for alternatives or you can buy them before flying back home. However, you should ask what kinds of medicines you can bring and the amount of each of them.

5. Visit your dentist regularly

Regular professional check-ups are vital to your veneers since your dentist or dental hygienist can inspect and spot your potential failures before they get worse. In addition, your dentist will polish your veneers pearly-white beam with specialized equipment. You can ask your dentist in Vietnam to send your dental record to your local dentist for follow-up care. Make it a point to see your dentist every six months to make sure that your veneers are maintained in the right way.

6. Be patient

You may feel a bit weird to your lips and tongue when you first close your mouth and your speech may change after your veneers are settled. Changes to the shape and size of the teeth are causes for these abnormalities and soon be gone after your tongue gets used to these changes. Your mouth is incredibly sensitive to these changes and will exaggerate your feelings at first. If your mouth feels sensitive, consult your dentist to take Panadol if needed, rinse with salt water 2-3 times per day. Be patient cause after just a couple of days, the feeling lessens and your mouth will feel normal again. At that time, your gums look pink and your veneers should look like natural teeth.

The longevity of your veneers depends on many factors, especially your way of taking home-care instructions. Remember to strictly follow the instructions above, so that you will get the best smile you deserve.

If you have any concerns or dental emergencies about your dental veneers, call your dentist for immediate solutions.
